Season 2011/2012 - Match Reports

Kate pushing in

Saturday, 8th October - Home - Lodway
Win 6-1

This was Wick's first home game in the Brunel 1 league following promotion from Brunel 2's. Wick started nervously and Lodway took advantage with a goal from Cara Summers in the first 10 minutes.

However, Wick sooned gained composure and structure and equalised shortly after. Following that, two more goals came in the 1st half.

Wick took total control of the game in the 2nd half and scored another 3. Goal scorers were Jo Fricker 3 (player of the match), Catrin Richards 1, Kate Swain 1 (Captain) and Jenny Mayo 1.

Eleri in Defence

Saturday, 15th October - Away - North Somerset
Win 8 - 0

Wick continue their success by beating North Somerset at Gordano. Wick were in control from the start and worked the ball around the opposition to get three goals in the first half.

Strong, quick and supportive play in the team found Wick in the North Somerset D many times but sometimes failing to convert those opportunities to goals. However, when we got the timing right, those goals came thick and fast; 2 goals in 3 minutes at one point in the game.

Wick scored a further 5 goals in the second half; one was a textbook-perfect drag flick from Rhian from a short corner and another was flying, top right hand corner stormer from Amanda.

Goal scorers were Jen Clark 3, Kate Swain 3 (Captain), Rhian Welch 1 and Amanda Hughes 1.

Saturday, 22nd October - Home - Redland 2's
Lost 3-1

Wick took on league leaders Redland 2's on Saturday. Wick, who were missing 3 key players, defended well against the onslaught from a well drilled Redland team, only letting in 1 goal in the first half.

Wick came out stronger in the second half and Jenny Mayo scored the equaliser. Redland applied a lot of presser and Wick conceded 6 short corners in a row, but to the frustration of Redland, Wick’s defence stopped them from scoring. Outstanding play came from Karen Wall (player of the match) through this tough play.

A hard decision by the umpire, saw our very own mild-mannered Louise being yellow carded for not moving 5 metes away... she will never live this one down...

Finally the pressure was too much for Wick and Redland conceded 2 goals towards the end of the match. Final score 1 -3. Good game ladies!

Saturday, 5th November - Away - Firebrands 4's
Won 3-1

Wick traveled to Failand to play Firebrands 4's. It was a hard game for Wick as Firebrands were at times playing very good hockey, but were unable to score, as Wick’s defence denied them the opportunity. Even at times when it felt like Firebrands had an extra player, known as the umpire, Kate Swain made a number of good runs (although according to Firebrand's Kate could only run and do nothing else!) and Louise took her chances and scored twice in the first half.

Second half saw Wick applying more pressure, with the game more evenly matched. Firebrands with some good play scored, bringing the score to 2 -1.

Trouble broke out on the pitch, with one of Firebrands players kicking off but once that was sorted, Wick applied pressure in the D and Jen Clark slipped the ball past the keeper making the final score 3 – 1 to Wick.

Saturday, 12th November - Away - Clifton 3's
Lost 3-1

Wick had a lesson on how to play hockey when we played Clifton 3's at Badminton School. From the start, the young, fit and skillful Clifton 3rd Team played very good hockey and had possession most of the 1st half. Wick’s defence held well against the strong and numerous short corners. But finally Clifton broke through and scored. Wick did have some chances towards the end of the 1st half but could not capitalise before Clifton scored again. The 2nd half saw Wick rally round and start to play better hockey with Jo Fricker taking her chance in the D and scoring; a well taken goal. Clifton’s third goal was worked well by the team, breaking through from mid field and scoring. Rachel Wooster (goalie) was player of the match as she kept Wick in the game.

Saturday, 19th November - Home - Thornbury 1's
Won 3-2

Saturday saw a mid table clash between Wick and Thornbury. Wick had the home advantage and two early goals were scored by Amanda Hughes and Jo Fricker.

Following an infringement in the D, a penalty flick was given; Jo Fricker narrowly missed scoring by hitting the post. Thornbury applied more pressure towards the end of the first half and scored an excellent goal from a well worked short corner, straight through Jen Clarks feet! So, on the next short corner, Jen C was not going to let that happen again so stopped it with her foot; giving away a penalty flick!! Hannah saved a great flick! 2 – 1 at half time.

The second half saw excellent hockey played by both teams, with Thornbury scoring a well worked goal from mid-field to bring the score to 2-2. After playing some well rehearsed hockey, Jenny Mayo scored a skilled goal from a well aimed cross by Captain Kate Swain to bring the score to 3-2. Thornbury stepped up their game in the last 10minutes of the game and Wick's defence was tested. But, Wick worked as a unit and denied them an equalising goal.

Player of the match went to Central Defender Eleri Price. Final score 3 – 2 to Wick.

Saturday, 26th November - Away - Westberries 2's
Lost 4-0

The first half of the match started off very evenly with chances for both teams. Unfortunately, before breaking for half time, Westberries managed to work the ball around Wick to put the score at 1-0.

The second half started with a rush; Westberries scored immediately from the 2nd half push back; well taken goal. The rest of the second half saw Wick to be very defensive and the pressure was applied in bucket-loads by Westberries. In a matter of minutes, Westberries had scored 2 more goals in 10 minutes. The final score was 4 - 0. Wick had a few breaks in the second half but dispute the well worked plays, all attempts were fruitless.

The defence held well from some stiff forward play. Eleri had another great game in defence and got player of the match again! Wick came off feeling we could of done better but have taken lessons from the game.

Saturday, 3rd November - Home - Somerset Gryphons
Lost 4-1

Wick were feeling the nerves before the start of the match, with Somerset flying high at the top of the league. However, the start of the match saw Wick take control and play some lovely hockey, putting Somerset under pressure. Wick's attack were looking good; we were unlucky to not score a from a number of opportunities. Wick's defence also had their shining moments; Somerset had a few breaks but our defence denied them the goals.

Towards the end of the 1st half, Somerset had a lot of action in the D; open play and many short corners. Eleri (Wick Defence) stopped a well struck short corner ball with her foot (Ouch!) which gave Somerset the opportunity of a flick. The flick was converted to make the score 1-0 at half time.

In the 2nd half, Wick started well with some good passing and supportive play. Somerset stepped up their game, performing as a top a league team. Another infringement in the D saw the opportunity for Somerset to have another Flick - the 2nd of the game! Again, this was well taken and converted to make the score 2-0. Unlucky Hannah (Wick Goalie)! Somerset scored twice there after this but Wick stayed strong mentally and physically. Goal scoring opportunities game fast for Wick but converting those set plays into 'top corner screamers' was difficult. The token goal for Wick came from fast paced, supporting play in the mid-field, a skilled cross by Louise (Wick attack) that missed two Wick attackers but reached Holly (Wick midfield) at the end of a well-timed run.

Jo did some lovely runs trying to break up Somerset's defence but we just could not get anymore goals. The final score was 4 -1 and Jo got Player of the match with 8 votes!

Saturday, 7th January 2012 - Fry's (Friendly) Won 4-1

To start 2012, Wick took on Frys at Well sway School. The first half of the game saw both teams feeling the effects of the Christmas celebrations with passes going astray and dirty tackling!
Ten minutes into the game, Amanda played some excellent hockey through the mid field and got on the end of a well defended stray ball to play a great cross to Jenny Mayo on the penalty spot, who put the ball firmly in the back of the net. Good work Amanda!

Reacting to the Wick play, Fry’s broke through the middle to score a good goal from the top of the D. Fry’s put a lot of pressure on the Wick defence for the rest of the half; Rhian had a great game at centre defence and Goalie Rachel saved some excellent shots; diving left and right. The score was 1 – 1 at half time.

The 2nd half of the game saw Wick play some really good hockey; “Like the Mighty Ducks in arrowhead formation!” (Quote Tom Price!).  It was great to see Wick using the whole of the pitch with some great passes between and from Eleri and Amanda, spreading the game out.
Wick had many opportunities in the D; Kate (Captain) and Jo Fricker (Forward) put the score up after some well worked short corners.   Further to that, Kate (captain) did some great runs down the right wing (with both hands on her stick – well done!) and put some early crosses in to Jen Mayo (forward) to get another goal with a drag flick.
The Wick attacking action was counterbalanced with some well worked play by Fry’s but the Wick defence (Karen, Rhian, Jayne/Jen C) kept them out of the D most of the time. Final score 1 – 4 to Wick.
Player of the match went to Goalie Rachel for some great saves and The ‘Blunder of the Match’ went to Jen Clark for marking her own team player!

Wick Vs Knowle (Friendly), Saturday, 14th January 2012

Wick arrived at Merchents Academy to a frozen pitch, where the lines couldn’t be seen. Brushes were found and after some good work by Chris, Holly and Kate the lines were in place and we were ready to play.

Wick dominated the game from the beginning with 4 goals in the first 10 minutes. Holly and Sian had their first game of the New Year and played great in mid-field. Amanda, Kate and Cat played some fast-paced, supportive hockey, setting up the attacking play well. Nothing got through the defensive line; well done to Karen, Eleri, Jayne and Jo F. By half time, the score was 7-0 with 4 goals from Jo F, 2 from Jenny M and 1 from Cat.

By this point, Rachel W (goalie) hardly touched the ball so it was decided to switch team keepers to even out the play.

Wick put some training exercises to the test, playing some great one-two’s up the pitch. Jenny M opened the 2nd half scoring with a deflection off her stick, on the end of an accurate cross from Katie (Captain). Rachel (goalie) played out of her skin for Knowle, and saved some great shots from Jo F and Jenny M but couldn’t quite keep her team out of the goal; well done to Jen C, Jo F and Jenny M. Final Score 12-0.

Our defence again were dominant throughout the game. Karen had an outstanding game in defence, reaching every 50:50 ball and marking her opposition out of the game. Karen got Man of the Match and also got ‘Dunce of the Day’ after some skilled defensive play, followed by a spectacular kick of the ball!

From the first push back, Wick started as they meant to go on with some really strong play but the OB’S defence were solid, keeping Wick from scoring. But, the time came when Wick broke down the right of the pitch, crossed the ball into the ‘D’ for Louise to deflect it in the goal.

On another less fortunate moment, Amanda passed a great ball through players, down the middle, for Jen C to pick up and get a one-on-one with the goalie. The firm shot saw the ball disappear...inside the Goalie’s pads... There were jovial shouts of “Push her in the Goal”...a short corner awarded instead.

OB’s had 2 attacking moments when they scored. The first, Amanda thought that the OB’s had not touched the ball in the D and said ‘Leave it’...Dunce of the Day to Amanda for that call! The second OB’s goal was more due to the breakdown in play by Wick. 1 -2 Half time.

The 2nd half saw the return of Dan to 1st team hockey. Great attacking play in the D saw a penalty flick awarded and scored by Amanda (trying to make up for her earlier blunder!), it was 2-2. At times the game did not move out of midfield as both teams were evenly matched. But, some great off-the-ball runs by Dan and supportive play by Holly on the left allowed the ball to move higher up the pitch for the Wick attack to score or get awarded short corners.

Wick went one goal up after a well worked short corner and quick play between Catrin and Lou. However, feeling the pressure, OB’s stepped up and were ruthless in the Wick D; after numerous saves on the line by Jayne, the ball rolled over the line to make the score 3 -3. With 10 minutes to go, Wick where not going settling for an equal score and those Tuesday evening fitness sessions really proved their worth as Wick were looking like the fitter team. Well structured attacking play gave Jenny Mayo the opportunity to put Wick 1 goal ahead and our win was further consolidated by a strong, skilled run by Katie who beat 2 midfielders, 2 defenders and megged the keeper! Final Score 5-3

Honours went to Hollie, Jen C, Amanda and Eleri. Player of the match went to Dan and Dunce of the Day went to Amanda. Big thank you to Sian for turning up; your time will come... just stick with us!!

Wick Vs Lodway HC, Saturday 28th January 2012

Wick were playing away to Lodway at Gordano School.  From the onset Wick dominated the game with great mid field play from Amanda Hughes, Dan Doble, Holly Stapleton and Captain Kate Swain. Wick had a number of chances and finally Jenny Mayo scored her first goal after 10 minutes.  Lodway broke once and capitalised with a well taken goal. Wick were determined not to let their mistake cost them the game so put some great moves together down the right side, with Catrin Richards crossing the ball to Jenny Mayo who converted to make the score 2-1. Wick’s forwards put relentless pressure on Lodway’s defence, whose goalie made some impressive saves. Finally Louise Hemmings scored a goal to make the score 3 – 1 at half time.

The 2nd half saw Wick dominate the game again. Wick’s defence held firm and did not concede a short corner all match. Wick’s continuing pressure saw Jenny Mayo score her hat trick and Catrin Richards take a good goal. The final score was 5 – 1 to Wick.
