Wick Ladies Hockey Club
We are a small friendly club based at The Metropolitan Academy, Bristol. We were originally based at Wick, where we shared facilities with Wick Football Club. Due to the advancement of hockey over the years we left our grass pitch behind for the more up to date image of a astro pitch. This resulted in switching our games to The Grange School in Warmley and more recently to The Metropolitan Academy in Fishponds. We currently have one team which plays in the Brunel Division 2.
Records show that Wick Ladies Hockey Club has been established since 1936. Through the years Wick Ladies Hockey Club has played in many tournements both indoors and out as well as going on tour round the country to play in tournements and friendly events. Early on in Wick Ladies Hockey Clubs career two teams were established. As early as the 1982/83 season Wick Ladies Hockey Club was running two eleven a side teams. In 1986 we saw the promotion of our indoor team into Division 1 where they worked hard and saw some great achievements against some of the best teams around. The season 1988/89 saw the introduction of a 3rd team helping the club attract young players. In 2000/01 sadly after 10 years of great involvement and development our 3rd eleven youth team had to be cut due to other local teams being unable to put together an opposing side.
Wick Ladies Hockey Club's best position over the years has been second in Division 1 and we are always looking to better that. Since the season of 2005/06 wick has maintained one team and has dropped down from division one and made its way back up into division one the very next season.
The great social experience of being part of Wick Ladies Hockey Club has always been important to Wick Ladies and this is shown by the great bond and achievements made over the years by players, it is therefore Wick's goal to create an environment where people can improve and develop, make friends and have fun!
Where did hockey begin?
This is just a short history about where hockey began and why it is what it is today, but please see the link at the bottom of this page to get full details on the origins of the ancient game of hockey.
Hockey believe it or not is one of the most ancient of sports, recods show that games were played discribing the use of sticks and a ball from the earliest civilisations.
The game was recorded to be popular throughout medieval europe and going by all time leader boards of top hockey playing countries this would make sense. The name hockey is also thought to be derived from the French 'hocquet', or shepherds crook.
Mens hockey joind the Olypics in 1908 although the womens hockey did not feature in the Olympics until 1980.
